Heard of Local guides? This July 2018 I did something I had not done before: being a Local guide, via the website LOKAFY.

Being a Lokafy local guide, showing the town to a small groups of tourists visiting my city Stockholm in Sweden is fun. I really don´t need to do it for the money either, although money is okay of course and an incentive and reason.

Because I work full-time as a freelancing illustrator and graphic designer for the past 21 years, and I am often busy doing my creative work most part of the year, this is a nice break from my regular work situation, which often is sitting and drawing, illustrating and designing stuff for clients, and keeping deadlines. I show my town mainly because its fun and rewarding. And it´s really new to me, when writing this blog article.

Back in the 90´s I used to work extra in the evenings at theatres, downtown. Both as a stage worker behind the scene and taking tickets. Tourists, visitors, travellers or how you like to label people going on a trip, often asked me advice. And I enjoyed sharing my knowledge about the Royal Dramatic Theatre, and the stories surrounding it. And giving a few pointers and tips on what to see, do and visit.

Heard from a friend and fellow illustrator

So, after hearing my friend Eva who is also a freelance illustrator in her day job, talking about showing tourists our town, for two years at least now, I couldn’t resist trying it out. Its been a fun experience so far.

At the time of writing this, I showed an american couple from USA, Ingrid and William, and a family from Greece, Babis and Angelica and their kids. Great people all of them. Could´nt be happier to have met them and show them my town. If you are visiting my City it wouldn’t be entirely impossible if we would meet, or my friend Eva or any of the other local guides roaming the town of Stockholm.

I gotta say, it´s a great way to experience a town, to actually meet and talk with a local who happen to be a actual local guide. In a way you wont be able to do that so freely with a professional guide who have lots of people to talk to and take care of. Who can often just give you a few words here there off the planned tour. And because of the responsibilities to a big group of 10, 20, 30 people have take you from A-B.

Lokafy

Lokafy´s own website, where you can read more and book a guide, is www.lokafy.com . I belive you can book Guides via online traveling agencies such as “Get Your Guide”  where you can leave a review, and read others reviews as well. But I think its quicker to just go on Lokafy´s own website and book directly. Tripadvisor is also a site where you can read more reviews about various Local guides people met.

When it comes to booking I know that an american couple booked their entire trip including getting help via their traveling agency, to book a local guide from Lokafy. A week before their arrival I said yes “I´m availabe” to the people at Lokafy. And after contacting the travellers via email to confirm meeting them and asking if they had any suggestions on what to see, day after met the group at their hotel. Which is what I always do. Meeting them in their hotel lobby.

My first tour experience

I remember my first tour, the american couple, arriving the Metro Station in Downtown area on my way to their hotel, how I kind of got goosebumps for the share reason how these things actually works. And how I really love it, how people who just like myself go online and book a trip and travelling to far away places. And everything just work.

Have a nice trip and experience wherever you roam around on this planet.
