Adobe offer only Adobe Creative Cloud with no alternative – while COREL like to give choices to its users
Adobe has now decided to completely stop offering so-called ”perpetual license” – traditional DVD box software licenses.
In other words, Adobe completely stops selling DVD boxes with physical DVDs with applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc. – stuff you can physically hold in your hand and thereby Adobe basically force their users to only use their software in their cloud – Adobe Creative Cloud . End of story.

Your old versions, you will be able to use as normal. But when you want to upgrade there will only be one option – Creative Cloud. Again end of story. And this is something that has fired people up quite considerably on various Adobe forums & communities around the world. Some love the cloud while some dissagree quite vocally and hate the Adobe Creative cloud for several reasons: increased costs, locked into an eternal subscribing etcetera.
COREL, software developer in Canada that develops programs such as CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, Corel PHOTO-PAINT, Corel PAINTER, Paint Shop Pro, Corel Video Studio and so on, have already chosen a completely different path and philosophy around this. Corel says they want to give users the freedom to choose the solution that best suits each user – a much nicer setting to me.
Corel has thus chosen to offer both DVD box versions that we all are used to (traditional software licenses), and Corel’s ”Cloud” if you will, called ”Premium Membership” and Corel ”Subscriptions”. This represents a significant advantage and opportunity for Corel users including CorelDRAW Graphics Suite with CorelDRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT. And Corel PAINTER. For me as a user of CorelDRAW, Corel PHOTO-PAINT and Corel PAINTER (and Corel Aftershot Pro & Corel Videostudio PRO) this is incredibly reassuring to know. With Corel I get several options while Adobe users will only have one option – either continue using old versions or move on to the clouds – Adobe Creative Cloud.

Corel Gérard Metrailler, Sr.. Director of Product Management, Graphics, explains:
”We will continue to sell the box version of CorelDRAW in stores, through online partners and on our website – www.corel.com. You can also purchase a full download version through our website and through selected channel partners. Both the box and the download version are perpetual licenses, e.g. they will never expire and you can keep using them forever (we do not commit to compatibility with future operating systems or hardware though). Alternatively, if you’re looking for a cost effective or short-term solution, you can subscribe to CorelDRAW on an annual or monthly basis. ”

It is very reassuring to read Corel’s response to Adobe’s change of business model regarding its creative products. I feel that for many creatives, being locked into a subscription based system will delay many from upgrading to the cloud based services, and instead relying on whatever versions of CS they are currently using for as long as they possibly can.
There are many reasons that I choose Corel products over Adobe equivalents. This latest news makes me even more certain that I made the right choice.
Hi Andy, I feel the same.
And thanks for the comment 🙂
